What sort of government do you want?

“She would have liked to tell them that behind Communism, Facism, behind all occupations and invasions lurks a more basic, pervasive evil and that the image of that evil was a parade of people marching by with raised fists and shouting identical syllables to make them understand.” ~ From the Unbarable Lightness of Being by  Milan Kundera,

Log on to Twitter, Facebook, whatever your favourite poison is, politics are popular right now.

But have you ever thought about what kind of government you really want?

Right? Left?

Republican? Democrat?

Tory? Labour?

For me, there is only one answer.

I’ll take any of the above, as long as they leave me alone.

The best government is a small government with small powers of authority, a small military and a very small budget to waste.

I cannot agree with anyone arguing for a larger government or more central control – of anything.

The current wave of both left and right populism terrifies me. Populism is but a small step away from totalitarianism, and authoritarian totalitarianism, whether communist or fascist is terrifying.

Beware the tyranny of the masses. (And the politics of difference.)   It’s no more fun than the tyranny of a dictator (indeed it usually ends up the same way).
